Old Hungarian Bass
Budapest, c.1890

Front Full Side Right Full Side Left Full

This is a beautiful old Hungarian Bass made on the Gamba pattern and can possibly pass for an Italian Bass.

19th Century Hungarian Italian model
Upper Bout: 21 1/4" Belly Length: 43"  (Back to Button, 44 1/2)
Center Bout: 13 1/4" String Length: 40 3/4"
Bottom Bout: 27" Varnish: Dark Red Brown
Rib Depth: 7 3/4" tapering to 6" at the Neck
Top: 1-piece Slab cut Pine (20" across the lower corners) with added wings at lower bouts and upper edges
Back: 2- piece Flamed Maple, flatback with angle break
Ribs: Maple
Neck / Scroll: Maple with Flamed Maple Neck graft

Features: This 3/4 sized Bass has quite the sound one would expect from a larger instrument. It bows smoothly, plays easily up and down the Neck and with Orchestra strings on it, has a beautiful Jazz Pizz as well. Definitely an equal sound quality to any Italian Bass its size. With the Italian Gamba shape and the single piece slab cut top, I am so tempted to call this an Italian Bass but I just don't have the provenance to back up the statement. The previous restorer, one of the best in Europe who works on the many famous classic Basses calls this Bass Hungarian, head to toe. I now have a new found respect for old Hungarian Basses and look forward to meeting up with and acquiring the next one. (Set-up by AES, NY. Sept. 2012) This Bass has been Sold.

This long elegant Swan-like scroll is typical old Hungarian. The back Button however is very Italian-like as are the volutes of the head. The Bass is topped off with a beautiful set of English style gears.
