The Michener Art Museum in Doylestown, PA has been hosting a series of free outdoor jazz concerts in their garden on Wednesday evenings and July 11th was Charles Fambrough & Friends. Fambrough a seasoned veteran, virtuoso bassist and band leader invited Ken to join him in a bass duet. Ken has not played professionally for about 15 years since his retirement to concentrate on his manufacturing of Smith Basses to meet the demand worldwide. Ken used his new/old bass, as pictured here on the site, and ended up playing several duets as well as a couple of tunes with the band so Fambrough could get a break. Also guest singing was Jon Lucien who coincidentally hired Ken to work with him 30 years ago in New York.
The audience of several hundred people, many of them elderly, seemed rejuvenated with a tremendous round of applause for the surprise venue. It quickly became standing room only as people brought lawn chairs and sat any place they could find an open spot. The concert overall was a complete success and went a little longer than normal due to every one just getting into the groove of things.
Charles and Ken will be discussing other future bass duos at upcoming local jazz events.
